Automatic Viscosity Analysis
Updated: Dec 4, 2022
The client, an oil laboratory, required a replacement process to give a non-certified estimate of oil sample viscosity.
Current means of estimating viscosity use an expensive setup involving custom equipment and visual analysis, while being primarily dependent upon the preparation of the sample which could greatly impact the eventual results.
We believed that modern visual computing methods were up to the task of automatically segmenting, processing and providing a calculated score for sample oil viscosity, without large investment in custom equipment, and allowed the lab control over the preparation of the samples. We also provided an interface for the customer to upload the prepared samples and to reorder the automatically segmented oil blots.
Following a similar method to the ISO approach, we reverse-engineered the existing calculations and compared against the third party equipment, with strong results, saving the customer a significant investment.
